Finally, November 30th rolled around and everyone was in a rush to put the finishing touches into their plans. We were definitely a little nervous at first but after a few minutes everything started falling into place and we knew that everything would go smoothly. Abbie lead the introduction, starting with having each of us introduce ourselves. We told the kids our names and what our names would be if we were chickens. Then we asked them the same questions as well as what they ate for breakfast. Being that some kids in almost every group ate eggs for breakfast we were able to lead into learning actual facts. Then, Stephanie and I lead the next game called Chicken True or False! We handed out flash cards th the 4th graders and told them to collaborate to divide themselves into two groups: true on the left false on the right. They were able to make new friends and learn some fun facts at the same time! Once they all got to the side they thought was the right answer we asked each kid to read their card and explain why they went to that section. Whether or not they got it right we would explain the correct answer in a bit more detail. The 4th graders really liked this part being that they got to stand up and move around a lot. Now we asked them to write two of their favorite new facts about chickens and their chicken names in their booklet. When they were finished, it was perfect timing to get some grass and head into the coup. Clare then taught the kids a bit about the importance of some of the chickens body parts and reminded them to pay attention to some of the details of the chicken. After this, we took the kids to look at the eggs the chickens laid and then let them try to feed the chickens the grass that they brought. This was of course everyone’s favorite part because each time, one of us would get a chicken and hold her so the kids could pet her. At the end of the section the kids were sad to go and I’m so glad I gave them the opportunity to learn something new. I’m super excited for the spring BioSITE project!
