Amanda's Teaching and Overall Thoughts

When the time came to start teaching the first Bookish 4th graders, the introduction was fun. We had a ball to pass around for them to say their name. Colin and I would say one thing about us and so did the kids. Overall though, all the kids were very smart. They all knew all these different fruits and vegetables and knew where to put them for the plant parts. Yes, they did get some things wrong, but they for sure did better then I did when it came to that game. The Frankenstein plant was always very exciting to watch because you would see those really good drawings on their Plant Parts section on their notepad that made my plant really ugly. When we would bring up the topic 'dissecting', all the 4th graders ask if we were dissecting a frog or a rat. The sad, little 'aww' they would make when we said we'd be dissecting beans instant was expected. I would discuss the seed parts and make sure they had writen down the parts on Seeds section of their notepad before getting to dissect the seed. I would demonstrate how the bean should be opened and then passed around the moist beans. Dissecting was very simple fro the kids, all they really had to do was open the bean, use the twizzers to take the skin and embryo out, and use the little magnefine glass. If they had a choice, they could try to open a hard, non-moistens bean but it would always end up in a mess with them trying to put the twitters thought and the little bean pieces flying everywhere.
When everything was calm now, I would ask them if they had questions about the high school or middle school or if they would want to check out cool stuff with the microscope, which got a good crown. The 4th graders really enjoyed the microscope but would still try to touch it when told not to. Then the kids would all have to leave and next week would come. Because my partner wouldn't be able to make it, I got Sima and she was a really good partner for thus slighter rowdier, smaller group of kids. What I had learned from teaching is kids are way smarter than I expected, like very, very smart. All of them liked math a lot and topics most teens in high school don't like. I'm kinda awkward around adults is another thing I learned from this experience. It was very intimidating for them to be around because I felt judged and down upon. One thing thought that I got a lot from the kids is," Can we eat this?","Can we eat that?"  Would always not recommend to eat anything because its not clean and not good. I had a lot of fun teaching the kids and i would gladly do it next semester for the spring.
