BioSite was incredible! It was such a fun experience, and I'm so glad I was apart of it! We spent at least a month preparing for the grand finale: teaching the 4th graders from Booksin all about biology! Birit, our BioSite teacher, taught us everything we needed to know to have two successful teaching days. As a group, we met every Tuesday during tutorial. This allowed us to prepare in many different ways. We learned what do do at each station and what to write in the booklets that were provided, but most importantly we learned how to keep the kids' attention. Things like call and response, interactive activities, and asking connecting questions were all things we were taught to include in our own teaching. We obtained all the skills we needed, until we finally separated into groups. Our group was in charge of teaching the 4th graders all about chickens! We were told to create our own lesson plan, so the ideas were endless! We worked with the other chicken groups to figure out what they were doing and brainstormed some activities. A big factor was timing. There were three chicken groups that all had to be in the coop at some point during the 25 minute window. Once the scheduling was figured out (and tested) we could finish up our lesson plans. Once we completed them, we were ready to teach the 4th graders!
