For our last round of Ecology Learning Service Projects, I chose to work with Birit from the Children's Discovery Museum to teach fourth grade kids from Booksin Elementary School. I had done this project last semester so I had gotten gist of how things worked. I knew that we all had to go through weeks of training, the only problem being that training was only on Tuesdays throughout the week and if somebody missed a day, they could've missed valuable information. To prepare, we did the labs that included of worms and watersheds. We all learned what we needed to depending on our lab stations. I had chosen to teach the kids about pollen and the importance of pollination with the interior of a flower with a flower dissection lab. We didn't have many days to prepare, so it was important that we were always on task and to ask questions that we needed to be answered. For the watershed lab, before we had started I had no clue what a watershed was nor what it was used for. First, we began by crumpling paper and marking it with different colors that symbolized plant life, human activity, and animals. Afterwards, we sprayed the paper with water from a distance to see where the water goes. This was one of the many labs we had. After labs, we often had discussions about what the importance was. After weeks of training, we finally got to see the fourth graders.
