BioSite Blog Post #2
Soon enough, the time to teach the fourth graders was right around the corner. May 4th rolled around and the fourth graders were on their way to our high school. I wasn't as nervous as last time because I had more experience with teaching little kids from last semester. I was very excited when they finally arrived. Our group had picked out flowers from around our school to give to the little kids since they were going to dissect them. The kids were very excited and were running around and jumping everywhere. When we finally calmed them down, we introduced ourselves and started with our name game. I even saw some kids from last semester's BioSite. They seemed to really enjoy the flower dissection and the microscopes. we talked to them about different types of pollinators and we discussed the importance of them in our environment. One thing I think went well was the enthusiasm that everyone had. I think we should have worked a little more on our time management. We found out that our lesson plan wasn't long enough because we had gone so fast. So by the time the next station came, my group and I decided to go a little slower to stretch out the lesson plan. Unfortunately, station 2 was filled with very shy, quiet kids. Even though we had gone slower, the kids didn't interact much and we were left with a lot of extra time to spare. We ended up passing the time by playing hangman. When the 3rd group came, we were a little nervous because at this point, we just didn't know what to fix about our lesson plan. Luckily, the last group was a success. The kids were very excited and into the lesson. They were also really funny and sweet. Since this group talked a lot, we didn't really get to finish our lesson plan, but it was alright because they understood the a lot of the lesson and learned lots of cool new stuff. Overall, we learned from our mistakes and we had a lot of fun with the fourth graders. We would definitely do BioSite again.
