What I took out of this teaching experience was that patience is key when teaching younger kids. Elementary school kids are known for being easily distracted and lose focus easily. When it was the first round of the first day teaching, I began to notice that some of the kids were dozing off or were not interested because our group's sense of vocabulary was too strong for young kids to comprehend. I was the first to notice this and quickly said something to my other group members. We decided to take the vocabulary words down and ask more open-ended questions as well. Within minutes, the kids were back into focus and were actually intrigued. With patience, a new teacher like myself, and my group, were able to notice and observe the mistakes that we were making before things got too out of hand. The second day of teaching went a lot smoother for us, but the kids this round were a lot more unfocused and seemed to not care, which ultimately made our lesson plan suffer. We tried several different tactics to try to get the kids to listen, and they finally did. The last group of the day was very calm and interested in what we had to say, which was good because we ended this project on a good note. Overall, I learned a lot about what it means to be a good teacher and have developed a new respect for all different kinds of teachers all around. This was a great experience and I would absolutely do it again.
