Teaching a flower dissection was probably the easiest part of bioSITE, mainly because the planning was simple and the lesson was effective. Unfortunately, Angelo wasn't able to come to both bioSITE lessons, but we were able to manage without him. The only things that really changed from the lesson plan were the people teaching each lesson. The fourth graders really enjoyed the overall dissection because they were able to see the flower as a whole. We started with a name game to get acquainted, and part of the lesson was devoted to teaching them about pollinators and the anatomy of a flower, as we felt it was important to teach them about how the flower would look before they started to open one up. Then we split the groups in half and had one half look at flowers under the microscope and the other half open up the flowers and see all of the parts up close. After a few minutes, the groups switched. This activity seemed to be the most fun for the fourth graders. We later concluded the activity and explained why we should protect pollinators. This lesson seemed to be very fun and interactive for each group of Booksin fourth graders that came our way.
