Preparation and Teaching

Working on with the 4th graders for the last 2 semesters has been very eye-opening for me. It has helped me learn how to teach and interact with kids and how to get their attention. Because it has been many months since the last 4th grader project, I was nervous to do it again, since I had forgotten a lot of what we had done previously. Luckily, once they came, the memories flooded back and I remembered everything. After doing all the different things in preparation, Kela, Nick, Charlie, and I decided to teach about flowers. Kela taught the kids about the parts of the flower and fun facts, Nick and Charlie taught about what the parts of the flower do and how to use the microscope and how to dissect the flower. Lastly, I taught why pollination is important with bees and other animals and I also gave some fun facts. Sadly, I missed the first time teaching the 4th graders as I had to be on a French field trip, but I came the second time the 4th graders came. When I wasn’t there, Charlie and Nick covered for me. However, when I was finally there to teach the kids, I was energized and ready to teach. Before the kids came, Kela, Nick, and I picked flowers to use. When the kids came, Nick started with an icebreaker by passing a ball around and telling their name and their favorite color/fun fact about them. This time however, was a bit more difficult as the kids were a bit more rowdier. However, we managed to quiet the kids down, and some of the kids were actually fun to be around, like a little girl named Abby who was very nice and funny! It was a bit weird teaching the first group, but after that group, the next few went pretty well and I think I taught them pretty well! After it all happened, I think the kids not only learned about flowers, but also had fun with the activities as well! I personally had a fun time doing it, and even though I couldn’t come for the first day of teaching, I’m still happy I did it. This has been very eye-opening, and if I could do this again, I would.
One of the kids put a flower on my ear and said "You're no longer ugly."
