Teaching by Zoe Venegas

The week of the first teaching date came and I was super excited. Unfortunately however, I could not teach because I had league championship finals for swimming. I was sad to miss the first teaching date, but luckily my team found someone that could stand in for me. About two weeks later the second teaching date and my opportunity to teach finally arrived. We came into the class during break to prepare our microscope slides and the desk for each student. We also had to gather enough flowers for each student, so we went to the garden to collect those. When the kids arrived we had everything set up and were ready to work. It got off to a bit of a rocky start with quieting the kids and each of us knowing how to quiet them and gather their attention, but we figured it out quickly. We started with a name game where the kids got a chance to talk a bit about themselves, which helped us remember their names and recognize their personalities. We then talked about the parts of the flower and had the kids place the names of each part onto our poster. Then we talked about different kinds of pollinators. While my other group members showed pictures of pollinators I took pairs of kids over to the microscope and explained what they would look at and then let them each look at two parts of the flower, the anthers and the ovules. After each kid had looked we did some trivia about flowers, and then asked the kids how they liked the group and asked one new thing that they learned today. After the first group, in my opinion, the rest of the day went super smooth. I felt like my group was very organized and did a great job. We did run into a few bumps like the kids adjusting the microscope lens when I looked away and we also ran out of flowers, however both had quick and simple solutions and everyone stayed calm. I was proud of our performance at the end of the day and was happy to hear that it was some kids, "favorite station of the day!". My second round of BioSITE was again a successful experience.
