Day 1:
Day one was a little rocky. Controlling the kids around the chickens proved to be a little more difficult than anticipated. We were able to get them under control and get through all of our activities. The kids really seemed to enjoy digging around in the dirt "pretending" to be chickens and getting to pet and feed the chicken. They were fairly engaged through the entirety of the lesson, but dozed off a little when we were talking about energy flow and the digestive system. With some exceptions, this group of fourth graders was easier to manage.
Day 2:
After noticing how unengaged the kids were with lecture style, my group decided to alter our approach to teaching energy flow by basing activities on it. These activities were much like the recycle timeline the compost groups were assigned which was more engaging. Relatively, this was a difficult group. The kids were more high strung and did not want to work together. They were harder to regroup and had trouble staying on task. That being said, they were more knowledgable and had more understanding about chicken and asked more questions.
BioSITE taught me many great things and strengthen skills that I already had. It placed a lot of focus on time management and planning, but also taught me how to effectively create and teach a lesson plan. Overall, BioSITE was a great experience for me and I am definitely planning on doing it next semester.
