My first day was a success! I was somehow able to keep 80% of my fourth grader's attention through a digestive lesson. I first started off by introducing myself and others. This led to some fun facts about chickens and also our activity. The activity was meant to inform our students of what chickens are constantly digging for. We had them use hand forks to simulate the action of a chicken clawing for worms, bugs, etc. After this we had our famous digestive lesson which was used to relate a chicken's niche in a garden ecosystem. Our full lesson ended when we gave them a tour of the chicken coop. You can accomplish a lot if you tell children that they will get to feed a chicken at the end. As far as preparation went, my group made a timeline of each of our activities and I also printed out a sheet of simple chicken anatomy beforehand. Everything went as we planned on the timeline sheet and though prior discussion.
