Day One & Two

The first day of teaching I was definitely nervous. My team had a plan that we had gone over a lot, but now we would actually be using it in front of a live audience. After getting mentally prepared we got ready for the fourth graders that were on their merry way. We found our spot next to the compost and set up our trays that were going to be used for the scavenger hunt. The first rotation of kids didn't go badly, but it didn't go well either. We had our routine but some things took longer than expected. The timing of the lesson was something that was being figured out during the first day for sure. The second rotation went slightly better. During this rotation we were still adjusting to the fourth graders and how long certain segements acually took. We also had to find ways to engage them more into the lesson. The third rotation the timing of the lesson went well with a few mistakes. The third rotation seemed to learn more by the end then the last two. This rotation went pretty well. After having two rotation behind it and being able to get experience on how to go about doing the lesson, it ultimately went a lot better.
The second day was the best day. This day went by smoothly. I again was nervous this day but not as much as the first day. We went into this day with experience and knowing how to manage time better. We knew what things to cut time on and how to do it without cutting the knowedge being sent short. The transitions between activites went smoother in additon. All three rotations seemed to be a lot more engaged than the previous day. By the end of each rotation all the kids seemed to have learned something new in a fun way. One of the main things we got better on this day was the trash timeline. We explained it better and had the fourth graders lineup against a fence instead of them being confused on how to. They seemed to really like this activity along with the scavenger hunt. Through the trash timeline they learned how long things really take to decompose and seemed fascinated by the length of time it does take. I think that will stick with them somewhat when they decide on what to do with their trash. Overall, this was a really good project and learing experience. Passing on knowledge to younger people and having them learn it in a fun way was a really nice experience.
