Day 1 and 2 of Teaching the 4th Graders

Day 1
Teaching the kids was very hard for us, but also very interesting. Kela had a great time controlling the 3 groups of 4th graders, however, Ben and I struggled. The first group was fine, but just wandered a lot. I stuttered quite a bit, and I do that sometimes when I'm nervous. Ben tried to be loud, but he failed to interest all the kids at the same time. The second team was the best, as they were calm and listened. They enjoyed looking for worms, and loved to pet the chicken when Kela picked them up. The third group was very loud and obnoxious, making it hard for even Kela to make them all pay attention. However, we realized that all of the teams loved worms and digging, so we told them to find worms and feed them to the chickens. The kids loved this idea. They found quite a lot of worms! By the end, the chickens were given more than 10 worms! The first day was hard, but we realized that now we know what to expect. We would bring more information, and we could control the group better next time.

Day 2
By day 2, we were all ready and completely prepared. We also found out that the leaves next to the chickens smelled like Froot Loops, which did help calm down the 4th graders when they arrived. The first group was well, and listened to everyone, even Ben. We started to feed the chickens dried corn bits, as we now had that from a pail on the chicken pen. The next group was very enthusiastic, and loved the chickens. However, one or two of them were very loud, and couldn't listen. They made a ring around a chicken, and put a bunch of dried corn in it. They were so happy to hand-feed the chicken food. The final group was by far the best. They were not only enthusiastic, but listened to the 3 of us, and did what we said. They loved to feed the chickens, pet them, and followed a few around the garden! This experience helped broaden not only my knowledge of chickens, but about kids and how they act. I loved the experience that this project brought, and I can't wait to do it again in the second semester! I know I can say the same for Kela and Ben, and I know we can do even better next time, as we can get even more chicken facts to share and broaden the knowledge of the 4th graders!
